It was a sunny, breezy, and cold day with wind chill in single digits for the December 4, 2021, Millinocket Marathon. The conditions did not faze Mike Thurlow, CLP logger from Lee Maine, and his team from joining 1,500 additional runners. Everyone was energized and anxious to start this year as the event was postponed last year due to the pandemic. This year marks the 6th year the event has been held and is undoubtedly an economic boost to the Millinocket area. The participants come from all over the country for the marathon or half. The race is the last qualifier for the Boston marathon for serious runners. It offers others an opportunity for a healthy experience in the shadow of majestic Mount Katahdin.

Mike’s runs serve two purposes. First, in honor of all the loggers that have supplied forest products to all the mills in the region. Second, to raise funds to grant a “wish” to a Maine child experiencing a challenging medical condition. Mike was joined in the event carrying a chainsaw in full logger gear by Terri Coolong-forester with Maine Forest Service (MFS), Andy Wood-safety representative with MEMIC, and Jeremy Grant-video producer, and his son Ty Thurlow. Jan Santerre, MFS forester, also joined with her support.

Mike Thurlow and Terrie Coolong carry in action.

Mike stated, “this has been a great experience and is happy he has participated to support Make-A-Wish.” He goes on to say, “I appreciate the contributions and support from Maine TREE Foundation, Maine SFI, and all the individuals that helped make this event happen.” While this was Mike’s last race, he hopes to remain involved and pass the saw on to his son Ty to continue the tradition.
